Planning underway to manage Iraqi oil- the top secret Bush administration plan to manage Iraq's oil fields for years after invading Iraq is not evidence that the U.S. war against Iraq is about oil. And almost as an aside in the article is this enlightening passage: "US special forces have been on the ground inside Iraq since September, monitoring the oil fields and rigs for booby traps and minefields." You'd think someone would've mentioned that by now.
U.S. to disclose data on Iraqi non-conventional weapons- "The United States administration is planning on disclosing classified information that includes concrete evidence proving that Iraq is implementing its plan to arm itself with non-conventional weapons."
The Human Cost- Robert Fisk is mad, both at chickenhawk politicians who send men to war without personal experience in battle, and the way that the media only shows romanticized, sanitized images of war, when the true grisly pictures might make us all more dedicated to averting such carnage.
"US will disclose classified information that includes concrete evidence proving that Iraq ia arming itself with non-c0nventional weapons" ??? Whoa!!! Are they finally going to publicly admit all the anthrax, botulism, West Nile virus starter kits and pre-cursor chemicals GHW Bush and Donald Rumsfled sold Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war?

No kidding. Did you see that the pre-game broadcast for the Super Bowl yesterday was from right under a gun turret of a battleship docked in the bay off of San Diego? The announcers had official hats from the ship...made me want to puke. And there were officers standing at attention directly behind the broadcasters, lending an air of military credibility to the whole charade. It was one long, not-so-subtle advertisement for the military and for the impending military action in Iraq, in an attempt to make us feel all warm and fuzzy about the fact that those same gun turrets will soon be firing all manner of weapons intended to kill, maim, and destroy from a quite comfortable distance.

Posted by: Louie at January 27, 2003 07:09 PMWell, that's the Super Bowl for you. 85% commercials, 10% patriotic bullshit, 5% performances by the blandest of the bland pop stars. Okay, I just made those numbers up...Did they actually play the game yesterday?
Can't wait for Jake's Academy Awards commentary.

Posted by: bakerkm45 at January 28, 2003 09:32 AMWhat the hell is wrong with you people? Do youeven have any pride in you country? Do you stand for anything but crying on your keyboard?
I THINK NOT. My guess is you are just out of school , and just want to hug trees.
You all think we chould leave Hussein in control? He's a ruthless murderer, kills hiw own family and citizens. Has and will poison thousands, and you think he's going to give up his control if we ask him politely? He's no better then Hittler, he's just not smart enough. He needs to be stopped by whatever means it takes.
Posted by: Big Ben at March 21, 2003 08:05 AMDude can't we all just get along? why the fuck are we even fighting? are we so selfish for oil?

THEY CALL IT FREEDOM. Here is my FREEDOM, go find your tree, and huge it. JACKASS'S
This is the first time that I'm ashamed to call myself a Canadian!!!!!!!! The total lack of leadership that exists in this country, being controled by the spinless jackasses in Quebec, totally makes me sick. I'd like to see Montreal; Quebec and/or Ottawa come under attack....to see them suffer the same as what happened in New York inflicted by those from the Middle East...... Then youd see a totally different side of the spinless French Bastards...they'd be on their knees begging the 'TERIBAL USA" to protect them!!!!!! I say let them suffer in their own puke!!!!!
Good going Bush....go kick some royal ass and finish what your daddy failed to do 12 years ago but this time totally remove the bastards of any ability to raise up again. Give them a taste of their own medicine.
MNS
I can't really get too mad at the current crop of "peaceniks." Our education system fails miserably to tell the whole story about the oppresive nature of governments and states in general. Not surprising either. To me it is a lazy and easy position to take when you oppose the war. You really don't have to DO anything. Just get off work, if you have a job, and take a walk outside. BIG DEAL. If you're against this war maybe you should read and get informed about how dictators really run things.
Posted by: Greg at March 22, 2003 04:15 PMAMERICANS! I feel sorry for you. You've been sucked in by your utterly corrupt and uninspired leaders, happily helped by a pathetic media and your own inherent racist attitudes.
It doesn't seem the Iraqis like having foreign invaders on their soil. I don't think anyone else will either.
No-one trusts America any more, even Britain's starting to have doubts about your intentions. Its becoming obvious that America can't keep treaties and takes no notice of international protocols. Even bribes and threats don't seem to work any more. No-one respects America any more because of your greed and lack of respect for life, human rights and the environment.
How does it feel to be alone?
Posted by: Luke Mitchell at March 27, 2003 06:37 AMWell Luke, It seems to me that you have something. It is FREEDOM , and that is great, HOWEVER, I am sure I speek for most when I tell you that what you have just said is a crok of shit. YOU ARE A EXAMPLE OF Racist ATTITUDE. Maybe you need to defend someones rights and freedoms. ONCE AGAIN, my freedom, YOU ARE A POMPAS ASS PIG who needs to experence, before you make yourself out to be a DUMASS!!!! TRY TO DEFINE FREEDOM IF YOU CAN!!!! ( JACKASS )
Posted by: Tito at March 27, 2003 11:28 AMso the Iraqis who didnt have any missles- had missles.
They dont have any chemicals, but have all the Suits and Antedots they could ever need?
They didnt kill 1000's of their own people, yet by every account they did. ?
The final Jury will be the people of Iraq when they celebrate their freedom!!! And any of you "Protestors" can shut they hell up and appreciate that you have the right to protest and not get killed for doing so...if you are so Righteous...swicth places with an Iraqi family...and then go protest in Iraq...you commies!

November 16, 2004Tales of Media WoeSenate May Ram Copyright Bill- one of the most depressing stories of the day that didn't involve death or bombs. It's the music and movie industries' wet dream. It criminalizes peer-to-peer software makers, allows the government to file civil lawsuits on behalf of these media industries, and eliminates fair use. Fair use is the idea that I can use a snippet of a copyrighted work for educational, political, or satirical purposes, without getting permission from the copyright-holder first. And most tellingly, the bill legalizes technology that would automatically skip over "obejctionable content" (i.e. sex and violence) in a DVD, but bans devices that would automatically skip over commericals. This is a blatant, blatant, blatant gift to the movie industry. Fuck the movie industry, fuck the music industry, fuck the Senate. Music industry aims to send in radio cops- the recording industry says that you're not allowed to record songs off the radio, be it real radio or internet radio. And now they're working on preventing you from recording songs off internet radio through a mixture of law and technological repression (although I imagine their techno-fixes will get hacked pretty quickly). The shocking truth about the FCC: Censorship by the tyranny of the few- blogger Jeff Jarvis discovers that the recent $1.2 million FCC fine against a sex scene in Fox's "Married By America" TV show was not levied because hundreds of people wrote the FCC and complained. It was not because 159 people wrote in and complained (which is the FCC's current rationale). No, thanks to Jarvis' FOIA request, we find that only 23 people (of the show's several million viewers) wrote in and complained. On top of that, he finds that 21 of those letters were just copy-and-paste email jobs that some people attached their names to. Jarvis then spins this a bit by saying that "only 3" people actually wrote letters to the FCC, which is misleading but technically true. So somewhere between 3 and 23 angry people can determine what you can't see on television. Good to know. Reuters Union Considers Striking Over Layoffs- will a strike by such a major newswire service impact the rest of the world's media? Pentagon Starts Work On War Internet- the US military is talking about the creation of a global, wireless, satellite-aided computer network for use in battle. I think I saw a movie about this once... Conservative host returns to the air after week suspension for using racial slur- Houston radio talk show host (and somtime Rush Limbaugh substitute) Mark Belling referred to Mexican-Americans as "wetbacks" on his show. He was suspended for a couple of weeks, and then submitted a written apology for the racial slur to a local newspaper. But he seems to be using the slur and its surrounding controversy to boost his conservative cred with his listeners. Stay Tuned for Nudes- Cleveland TV news anchor Sharon Reed aired a story about artist Spencer Tunick, who uses large numbers of naked volunteers in his installations and photographs. The news report will be unique in that it will not blur or black-out the usual naughty bits. The story will air late at night, when it's allegedly okay with the FCC if you broadcast "indecent" material. The author of this article doesn't seem to notice that Reed first claims that this report is a publicity stunt, but then claims it's a protest against FCC repression. I'd like to think it's the latter, but I'm not that much of a sucker. More Media News |
