Grrrr....
Just flipped past CNN, where they were apparently re-broadcasting the day's edition of Moneyline. But instead of the expected scene of talking heads and economic graphs, there was a handsome young fella strumming a gee-tar and drawling a country tune. His song was accompanied by a montage of footage of U.S. soldiers gearing up for battle, and gripping shots from the 9-11 aftermath.
The twangy singer was Darryl Worley. The song was "Have You Forgotten?" The reason the economic news show played a country-western music video is anyone's guess.
As captain of my neighborhood media criticism team, I was aghast that a country music song was being pitched as news, and financial news at that. CNN.com explained the performance thusly, "Members of the music industry remain split over war with Iraq. Country music singer Darryl Worley tunes in with his hit song 'Have You Forgotten?' and explains why he supports U.S. military action." So that's apparently the connection to international finance, Darryl is part of the music industry. But then, my dad's part of the construction industry, so I guess it would be just as valid to interview him.
I was even more aghast at the blatant propaganda that was going on. A moving country song calling for war, its emotional power boosted by the CNN-supplied video footage of brave troops and iconic, heart-rending 9-11 footage. That's amazingly biased. Imagine if CNN had let a fellow perform an anti-war song, and supplied their own footage of carnage in Afghanistan and starving children in Iraq. Same thing (well, the same except in the latter case it would be a scandal proving that the media had a liberal bias, and someone would be fired).
And I was pissed at the song's lyrics' guilt-by-non-sequitor argument. The song seeks to be a response to any criticism of the war in Iraq or any U.S. policy by reminding the listener of the anguish Americans felt at the 9-11 attacks. That's it. Think the war is a bad idea? "Have you forgotten how it felt that day / To see your homeland under fire / And her people blown away?" And so on. The song is either a guilt-trip towards those who disagree with American policies, or a distraction ploy to change the subject from Iraq to 9-11.
But there is one odd nugget in there:
"Some say this country's just out looking for a fight
After 9/11 man I'd have to say that's right"
Yeeeeeeee-haaa! U-S-A!! U-S-A!!!
As a writer, I have to say that those lines really fuck up the song's message. Most of it has a tone of remembered pain, or quiet determination, or noble adherence to core American values. Then it suddenly concedes that maybe America is out to kill because it's angry, and that that's okay. Poor writing Darryl (well, Darryl and rarely-mentioned co-writer Wynn Varble).
So my first thought was, "hmmm, I wonder if Darryl Worley is on an AOL-Time Warner-owned record label." Nope, he's on Dreamworks Nashville, and I can't find any links between the two companies.
Maybe Moneyline's ratings are sagging, and they hope to capture the country-western fan demographic, the young women who like attractive men demographic and the let's bomb the bejeezus out of the brown people demographic. Maybe Lou Dobbs owns stock in Dreamworks. Maybe Darryl has a keen instinct for investment and trading. I dunno.
Those were some of the worst song lyrics I have ever read. I agree when you say that the lyrics are just trying to make the American people feel guilt. Fuck that. I think if he should go on television and support the war, somebody should definitely be able to go on television and protest this war. Gah!
Posted by: stephanie at March 12, 2003 10:22 AMthis isn't the most eloquent way to say it, but seriously? those lyrics SUCK!

Posted by: the evil queen at March 12, 2003 10:46 AMAnd it took two people to write those lyrics!
I think it's part of the country music cliche. You've got to be folksy and down-home and a reg'lar workin' Joe. Which means cutting out flowery language and metaphor and anything that you wouldn't hear in a regular conversation between two Texans at a truck stop diner. Of course it's a big charade, because you're not exactly a regular working man when you have a million dollar home and a video on CMT. But if you don't play into that persona, you don't get the million dollar home or the video on CMT.
Posted by: Jake at March 12, 2003 12:52 PMAs an aside, Mrs. Lou Dobbs was arrested at New Jersey's Newark International Airport trying to smuggle an unlicensed handgun through the metal detectors as she was going to fly somewhere or other.
This is a violation of many Federal and state laws. (New Jersey has the strictest handgun laws in the country, next to New York City's "Sullivan Law.")
Why haven't we ever heard anything more about this?
Posted by: Lurch at March 12, 2003 01:55 PMI think Jake posted something about Mrs. Dobbs some time ago.
Posted by: Eric at March 12, 2003 04:10 PMI don't believe you all. This song is not a guilt-trip, it's a reminder of why we are targeting Iraq. It's not changing the subject, it's reminding us what the real subject is. The American people have a real short attention span, and it's about time somebody tried to get our attention back on what this is all about.
"Imagine if CNN had let a fellow perform an anti-war song, and supplied their own footage of carnage in Afghanistan and starving children in Iraq."
Carnage in Afghanistan eh? did you read the article from your own link on "why he supports U.S. military action," and what our troops are doing for the Afghani people? Have we done something to cause the children in Iraq to starve, or might starving children have something to do with their country's Leader, who has slaughtered countless numbers of his own people?
I'm not really into country-western music, I'm not interested in attractive men, only women, and I'm not for bombing the bejeezus out of the "brown people" or anyone else(how biased is that? the brown people?? so you're saying that everyone who is for military action are not only warmongers, but racist too?), except those who would try to take away our freedoms. Replace "brown people" with "terrorists," and then I suppose I'd fit that one.
I think I best fit into the demographic of military members who believe that the freedoms we take for granted every day are not free, and are worth fighting for. Those who will never forget what happened on September 11th, 2001.
Neil.
I have an old friend in the military and I respect his decision to be there, although I wish he had not made it. But hear me out.
"Have we done something to cause the children in Iraq to starve,"
Yes.
"I'm not interested in attractive men, only women,"
No one is calling your sexual orientation into question. Don't worry. :)
"I think I best fit into the demographic of military members who believe that the freedoms we take for granted every day are not free, and are worth fighting for."
Very true. So why are we trying to take the basic rights to life and pursuit of happiness away from civilian Iraqis? Because that is what will happen when you, as part of the shock troops, pelt them with however many thousands of bombs on that first day.
Have fun with that.
"...Those who will never forget what happened on September 11th, 2001."
Yeah. I can't forget either. And you know what? Iraq had NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.
Do your job and get out, my friend, and save your soul. You sound like a good guy.
Maybe visit Sean Church's blog, http://www.seanchurch.com/blog/ , and see what his take on it is. He was in Desert Storm, I believe.
Posted by: michele at March 13, 2003 11:46 AMAdding to Michele's comments, I'd like to remind Neil that, even if we didn't "cause" starvation in Iraq, our illustrious vice president made millions of dollars selling "technologies" to Iraq--after we were at war with the nation. According to the Constitution of the United States, that is treason, worthy of impeachment, just as getting a blowjob apparently is.
Millions of dollars would (magnanimously) feed a lot of people. Cheny was CEO of Halliburton, when it provided "technologies" through subsidiaries to Iraq. A CEO can't make millions of dollars without knowing the clients (or despots) to whom his or her company is selling its product, though he or she can certainly ignore them (thereby making more money, accruing greater power).
If Tricky Dick Cheney's the second in command of the U.S., why should we not question the motivation of our Supreme Court-elected administration? Misunderstanding breeds contempt breeds hatred breeds terrorism. Our administration, by attacking Iraq, is not looking to solve the problem at the root of all this stupidity, although I'm not sure our present administration is capable of doing that.

Posted by: A Wise Resonable Person at April 17, 2003 02:39 AMA Message for all history buffs that try to relate the current situation in Iraq to the events of World War II. These "buffs" support a parallel between Saddam's regime and the regime of Hitler. Their argument is that the rest of the world, except the coalition (i.e. US, UK, and some minor countries), has appeased Saddam and that the coalition is actually preventing a major world war from happening. Obviously, this "truth" is very faulty:
1. "Saddam is like Hitler because he is gaining nuclear weapons and threatening the world with his chem. and bio. weapons"
--> Wrong, Hitler started to militarize Germany and the US and European nations did nothing. Saddam is trying to gain weapons and what is the world doing? They are trying to strip him of his weapons through a proper and legitimate way- UN inspections. And the IAEA confirmed that Saddam doesn't posses nuclear weapons.
2. "Saddam is acting like Hitler because he is gaining power and will soon use his weapons to attack and annex neighoring countries."
--> Wrong. When Hitler aggressed and annexed Austria, Chekoslavakia, etc., the US flatly did nothing and the major European nations practiced a policy of appeasement. When Saddam tried to take over a neighboring country (Kuwait), what did the world do? They formed a UN coalition to oust Saddam from Kuwait.
Several other arguments similar to those above are presented by these history people (sadly, some of these people are even educated teachers). As anyone can see from the info presented above, there is no real parallel between Saddam's actions/policies and Hitler's actions/policies. In fact, the only parallel that is apparent to me is that in WWII, the Axis Powers were the aggressors who attacked preemptively. Seem's quite similar to the US's preemptive strike policies.
Note: I am not in support of Saddam. In fact I feel great animosity towards him becuase of what he has done to the people of Iraq. However, this does not mean that the US is correct. Conversely, the US is very wrong and I hope that this event is recored in history as a mistake. It should be a lesson to later generations of the US to not vote for conservative war hawks like Bush who want to control other parts of the world because it is in their "interest" (interest=natural resources for US). Maybe a regime change is more necessary in the US than in Iraq

Posted by: in.dog.neato at August 26, 2003 05:42 AMWell well well. War's "over" and what did we learn? It was an unjust and unnecessary war. Lou Dobbs seems to forget how he defended the war in his pre-war commemtaries. This just shows you how dumb the media is. They were all hyped up during the start of the war, calling the "danger" that Iraq posed an imminent threat. Many people were affected negatively by this inaccurate reporting. I remember seeing a protest against the war on the streets and this one woman becomes enraged at the protestors and starts screaming slurs and calling them unpatriotic. Oh how sad it is when people go bad. If this woman had actually thought carefully about what the protestors were doing instead of being manipulated by the media and white house, she would have realized that the protestors were perhaps the most patriotic people at the time of the war. Why? Because they were fighting against an unjust war and trying to save the lives of our soldiers! Now that the truth is out, no one can deny that they (media and government) made big mistakes (by supporting the war and presenting a false view of the events). This is why I suggest people to stop listening to the BS spewed out by the American media. It is just an alterted form of government propaganda. Don't watch Fox, CNN, etc. Seek out better alternatives (BCC, Independent news, etc.).

November 16, 2004Tales of Media WoeSenate May Ram Copyright Bill- one of the most depressing stories of the day that didn't involve death or bombs. It's the music and movie industries' wet dream. It criminalizes peer-to-peer software makers, allows the government to file civil lawsuits on behalf of these media industries, and eliminates fair use. Fair use is the idea that I can use a snippet of a copyrighted work for educational, political, or satirical purposes, without getting permission from the copyright-holder first. And most tellingly, the bill legalizes technology that would automatically skip over "obejctionable content" (i.e. sex and violence) in a DVD, but bans devices that would automatically skip over commericals. This is a blatant, blatant, blatant gift to the movie industry. Fuck the movie industry, fuck the music industry, fuck the Senate. Music industry aims to send in radio cops- the recording industry says that you're not allowed to record songs off the radio, be it real radio or internet radio. And now they're working on preventing you from recording songs off internet radio through a mixture of law and technological repression (although I imagine their techno-fixes will get hacked pretty quickly). The shocking truth about the FCC: Censorship by the tyranny of the few- blogger Jeff Jarvis discovers that the recent $1.2 million FCC fine against a sex scene in Fox's "Married By America" TV show was not levied because hundreds of people wrote the FCC and complained. It was not because 159 people wrote in and complained (which is the FCC's current rationale). No, thanks to Jarvis' FOIA request, we find that only 23 people (of the show's several million viewers) wrote in and complained. On top of that, he finds that 21 of those letters were just copy-and-paste email jobs that some people attached their names to. Jarvis then spins this a bit by saying that "only 3" people actually wrote letters to the FCC, which is misleading but technically true. So somewhere between 3 and 23 angry people can determine what you can't see on television. Good to know. Reuters Union Considers Striking Over Layoffs- will a strike by such a major newswire service impact the rest of the world's media? Pentagon Starts Work On War Internet- the US military is talking about the creation of a global, wireless, satellite-aided computer network for use in battle. I think I saw a movie about this once... Conservative host returns to the air after week suspension for using racial slur- Houston radio talk show host (and somtime Rush Limbaugh substitute) Mark Belling referred to Mexican-Americans as "wetbacks" on his show. He was suspended for a couple of weeks, and then submitted a written apology for the racial slur to a local newspaper. But he seems to be using the slur and its surrounding controversy to boost his conservative cred with his listeners. Stay Tuned for Nudes- Cleveland TV news anchor Sharon Reed aired a story about artist Spencer Tunick, who uses large numbers of naked volunteers in his installations and photographs. The news report will be unique in that it will not blur or black-out the usual naughty bits. The story will air late at night, when it's allegedly okay with the FCC if you broadcast "indecent" material. The author of this article doesn't seem to notice that Reed first claims that this report is a publicity stunt, but then claims it's a protest against FCC repression. I'd like to think it's the latter, but I'm not that much of a sucker. More Media News |
